Post-Revolution Life
Directly after the revolution Paterson served as the attorney general of New Jersey but he went on to also become one of the first senators of New Jersey, the governor of New Jersey, and finally, an associate justice for the United States Supreme Court.
As a senator of New Jersey Paterson served on the Senate Judiciary committee that set up the federal court system that Paterson would later become a part of. Paterson was also a hardcore member of the federalist party. As a governor he revised the common laws that would later be included in the New Jersey State Legislature. Finally, as a Supreme Court justice he presided over the cases of men charged during the Whiskey Rebellion. As a judge he believed in the concept of "law over government." |
